Sang Shen, violinist, was born to musician parents in Shanghai, China. She was accepted to the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory of Music at age 9. Shen has won most of the major competitions in China and performed as a soloist with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in the Concertos of Vieuxtemps and Mozart, a performance that was shown on Chinese television.


In 1988, Ms. Shen came to Chicago to study violin at Roosevelt University on a full scholarship. Her instructors included David Taylor, Assistant Concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Gerardo Ribiero, Professor of Violin at Northwestern University. In 1989, she was the winner of the Leonard Sorkin Award for Violin, and the Harvey Mittenthal Scholarship. In 1990 and 1991 she won second prize in the American Opera Society Competitions. In 1990 and 1991 Ms. Shen was Concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Civic Orchestra under the direction of conductors such as Sir George Solti and Pierre Bolez. She joined the Grant Park Symphony in June of 1991 and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in October of 1994. Ms. Shen is also an experienced teacher. She taught for two years at the Merit Music School in Chicago and is currently on the faculty of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. She has numerous private students, as well.


Ms. Shen is an active chamber player with performances at Chicago's Orchestra Hall and broadcasts over Chicago's WFMf fine arts radio station. She also has performed chamber music with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Music Festival. Since coming to Milwaukee, she has given solo recitals on several occasions. Her solo credits in the Chicago area include appearances with the Chicago String Ensemble and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra. Since joining the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra she has appeared numerous times as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and with The Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra.


Since she moved to San Diego 10 years ago, she has developed a successful teaching career. Many of her students have won concertmaster positions, competitions, and scholarships. Besides her busy teaching schedule, she has been playing with the San Diego Symphony, the Classics 4 kids concert series, and the California Chamber Orchestra. Also, she has been actively recording various genres of music videos. They are on her Youtube channel where she has almost 2k subscribers.
